Sean Penn Earns The Oscar

With Sean Penn, there is forever the sense that he has demons of his own to beat back before he can slip underneath the skin of whatever character is awaiting dissection on the table in front of him.

And so it felt with the movie 'Milk', that there were wounds that he needed to suffer through first to excavate the soul of the slain San Francisco politician and gay-rights activist Harvey Milk.

It was a transformative journey, and Penn took all of us along with him, from the grit of a subway hookup to the emerging idealism of the martyr he was to become.

Though Penn has countless performances from the searing to the sublime, 'Milk' became the crucible that would test him, revealing a new essential core of complexity within an already complex actor's actor.

Jerry Lewis Feels Oscar Love

Comedy film icon Jerry Lewis was greeted with a standing ovation when he took the Kodak Theatre stage to accept a special Oscar for his longtime charitable endeavors.

Never nominated for an Oscar, the prolific multihyphenate was honored with the Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award. Lewis said he was deeply touched by the honor.

"For most of my life, I've thought that doing good for someone didn't mean you would receive any commendation for an act of kindness - until now," said Lewis, who has battled health problems in recent years and spoke in slow but strong voice. "This award touches me in the very depths of my soul."

Eddie Murphy presented the honorary Oscar to Lewis, whom he dubbed a "famous overgrown kid" who has drawn inspiration from children.

In more recent decades, Lewis drew equal acclaim for his televised charity marathons on behalf of the Muscular Dystrophy Assn. The annual Jerry Lewis MDA Labor Day Telethon has raised more than $2 billion since 1966.

Angelina Jolie will wear a $20 million necklace to the Oscars. The 'Changeling' star has reportedly visited several jewellers in New York to find dazzling gems to wear to the glitzy event.

She's been driving all of the high-end jewellers of New York crazy. She's looking for the impossible, a drop dead gorgeous $20 million diamond necklace to wear to the Oscars.

Angelina is nominated for Best Actress for her role in 'Changeling' but is particularly keen to look her best in case she runs into her love rival, partner Brad Pitt's ex-wife Jennifer Aniston, who is also set to attend.

Meanwhile, racing driver Danica Patrick says she wants Angelina to play her in a movie of her life because Jennifer is "too old".

The 26-year-old sports star said: "I've always said Angelina Jolie would be great at playing me because she's an action star. I don't think it would be age appropriate for Jennifer to do it. She's older than me!"

Vietnam Veterans Protest Jane Fonda's Broadway

It's been decades but Jane Fonda still can't shake her "Hanoi Jane" image from the Vietnam War.

About a dozen Vietnam veterans and other protesters on Saturday picketed the theater where the 71-year-old actress is starring in the Broadway play '33 Variations,' telling passers-by that she had once visited their communist enemy in Hanoi.

Fonda was tagged with the sobriquet "Hanoi Jane" after visiting the North Vietnamese capital in 1972, where she made radio broadcasts critical of U.S. policy and sat on an anti-aircraft gun laughing and clapping, as she describes in her autobiography, "My Life So Far."

Though she still defends her anti-war activism, Fonda has acknowledged that the incident was "a betrayal" of American forces.

Leonard Cohen Takes Stage After 15 Years

Montreal bard Leonard Cohen has written and recorded many great songs, and influenced many times that number of peers and followers with his spiritual, morose and occasionally carnal poetry and music.

Fifteen years may seem like a long time, but Cohen is a patient man. 'Hallelujah' reportedly took two years to write and once allegedly spanned 80 verses before he found a way to whittle them down.

'Hallelujah,' it should be noted, isn't some gem from Cohen's late 60s and 70s heyday. It's a track from his relatively unsung later years (1984 to be exact) and is found on an album initially deemed so uncommercial it didn't even warrant an American release.

He performed Thursday at New York City's Beacon Theatre and is scheduled to perform May 5 at the Chicago Theatre.
